Fashion and fame. Two words that have always gone hand in hand.

Celebrities have shaped and influenced fashion trends throughout history, helping dictate the newest silhouette or the next “it” item. But, with the advancement of technology, the celebrity is able to have an even stronger hold on what industry will be following, especially with the likes of social juggernaut models Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid on the industry’s go-to platform – Instagram.

LOULOU, a leading Canadian fashion and beauty magazine, understands the marriage of celebrity and fashion in today’s fast-paced industry. Providing its readers with what the hottest models and celebrities are wearing and how you too can get the look that Kylie Jenner posted on her Snapchat!

I had to opportunity to gain some insight from LOULOU’s Market and Celebrity Editor, Carolyne Brown on where she sees the industry moving and who she looks to for inspiration.

1. What is the biggest surprise/change you’ve seen in your industry over the past year?

“I used to work on celebrities’ looks three months in advance. Now, an “it” girl can come out from her hotel looking fabulous and we post her photo online the same day.  Our readers want to get the same pieces immediately and be able to shop her look. Everything is moving so much faster!”

2. Do you see any disruptors or game changers in your industry? And if so why are they so important to the progression of fashion?

“The power of social media has changed everything in the industry, from the way we connect with our readers, to being informed about the latest news in the business. People now decide who is hot right now and choose who will be the next Kendall or Gigi.

I personally love Instagram, it’s quick and it’s my favourite source of information. The only thing is that you end up spending so much time on your phone, so it’s always good to turn it off sometimes.”

3. What influencers/individuals do you follow religiously to get your inspiration from?

“I have two obsessions: celebrities and bright colours, so my Instagram feed is definitely fun!

My fav celebs to follow:

  • Shay Mitchell (@shaym) – I also follow her on Snapchat (@officialshaym) – she’s the best!
  • Louise Roe (@louiseroe)
  • Behati Prinsloo Levine (@behatiprinsloo)

My fav colourful accounts to follow:

4.  And do you see any major trends approaching in the fashion world that might surprise others?

“Everything comes back! I was 12 when Drew Barrymore was wearing choker necklaces and brown lipstick in 1995. I never thought in 2016, I would be looking for the perfect nude lipstick and own a collection of 10 chokers.”

These questions were compiled by account coordinator Cole Douglas. Who do you follow on Instagram? Let us know here or on Twitter
