#DailyDive: My go-to sources to have a pulse on current events

Curiosity and ongoing learning are key requirements at our agency. Studies show that people who continue to learn as professionals are better problem-solvers, more creative and tend to enjoy their jobs more ̶ so that’s a bonus. This month we are sharing our go-to professional resources at APEX PR and ruckus Digital.

Working in the communications industry typically means consuming a variety of media every day. Between industry updates, social media check ins and keeping up with daily news, PR practitioners should have a pulse on current events – in and outside the industry.

In an effort to keep up in a fast-paced environment, I have a few familiar go-tos for my daily dive.

For PR, industry-related news I check out AdNews and PR In Canada regularly. Both outlets offer up-to-date info on the communications world and brand updates that can be viewed at a glance or delved into deeply for a closer read.

For national/world news updates my go-to is consistently CBC – particularly the podcasts available through the news network. With a range of options from quick updates to in-depth, investigative journalism, this outlet offers something for everyone. Recently I’ve been checking in on Front Burner, which takes a deeper dive into compelling, current issues with a Canadian perspective.

For local updates I often find myself checking out BlogTO. From the must-see restaurants, bars, cafes, festivals and events offered throughout the city, the site never fails to provide an interesting update or insight into one of the city’s many hidden gems.

Browsing social media on the regular is a given in this industry – my preferences are Instagram and occasionally Twitter. – From both a brand and influencer perspective, social media is a great resource for trends, brand product/service updates and keeping up with friends, colleagues and influencers.

An essential step in any daily dive is through classic word-of-mouth. Hearing what my colleagues and friends are reading or listening to offers insight into new avenues that may not have been previously considered. I look forward to seeing what my peers are checking in on regularly through their own daily dive!
