Cole Douglas is back with the APEX family, joining the team for his second tenure. Cole attended Humber College where he took his bachelor’s degree in public relations.
1. How has your previous work or volunteer experience helped you get to where you are today?
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with APEX previously – it was my first, full-time agency job after college. I learned a great deal about the industry during the three or so years I worked with the firm – focusing on the consumer portfolio. I then did almost two years at NKPR where I cut my teeth with events (some big red carpets during TIFF, an opening with a Raptor, etc.), as well as focused on the real estate sector. By combining both experiences, I was able to look at a client’s objectives from various angles and offer big ideas ranging on the spectrum from issues management to private, high-scale events.”
2. What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?
“I have always been excited when stakes are high. There is something about the energy and time crunch that makes you buckle down and pull together the program or the defense (depending on the challenge). I find I learn the most when I’m pushed out of my comfort zone. Personally – I like to stay active, as it keeps me grounded.”
3. What moment or accomplishment in your career are you most proud of?
“That is a tough one – I have two very different, but notable moments. One was here at APEX when we worked closely with the Municipality of Wood Buffalo. A few of my very talented colleagues and I supported them on the ground in Fort McMurray during the 2016 wildfires on a massive crisis communications team. The second was at NKPR when I helped plan and execute the Vanity Fair party during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The biggest stars were there – it was the party to be at.”
4. How do you stay up to date on industry trends and best practices?
“We live in a time where technology allows us to easily watch – in detail – what is happening in the world around us. Quite frankly, I stay focused on the news, you learn the most from current events and how those parties respond or tackle the challenges at hand.”
5. Is there something you hope to achieve while at Apex?
“I think it comes down to the work, not necessarily the industry. If the client is willing to take risks and looks at you as a partner at the table, that is when the magic happens.”
6. Three interesting facts about yourself.
“Hmmm – I was competitive in tennis when I was in high school, I’m the oldest of five siblings, and I was in Cats the musical…. twice.”
